This is an original sumi-e painting of two goldfish in a circle, in Japanese natural pigments on washi rice paper.
Size: 31×31 cm, ca. 12×12 inches.
Gold fish was brought to Japan by Chinese traders in Medieval times and was sold to the samurai and nobility as highly prized pets. Like in China, the goldfish serves as a symbol of wealth, fortune, and good luck.
Two goldfish in a circle also represent Enso, a Zen circle.
