Sumi-e Winter Bamboo Painting: Japanese Haiku Calligraphy Art

€470,00

This is an original sumi-e painting of the bamboo in black ink, featuring a classic Japanese haiku poem calligraphy.

Size: ca. 28×20½ inch = 71×52 cm.

Sumie (or suibokuga) is an art of Japanese ink painting. This particular painting of bamboo has an inscription of the classic haiku (17-syllable poem) of the Classic Japanese poet Matsuo Basho that reads:

木枯しや竹に隠れてしづまりぬ

[ kogarashi ya take ni kakurete shizumarinu ]

which can be translated as:

The winter storm
hides in the bamboo
and becomes quiet.

The artwork also has imprint of my name seal and a seal that reads "Finding the Way" also carved by myself.

The bamboo is symbolic of purity and innocence, but also of strength and prosperity. This is one of the favourite plants in traditional oriental painting and a recurring subject in my sumi-e artworks. I prefer to paint bamboo in pure Oriental minimalist style where every element is painted with a single precise stroke, leaving much of the painting (or, indeed, its "meaning"!) to the viewer's imagination.
