Original Enso Calligraphy: Japanese Ink Zen Circle Art

In Zen Buddhism, enso is a circle that is hand-drawn in one fluid brushstroke to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create.

I draw enso circles to concentrate and to unleash my creative power. This is always spontaneous, depending on what's around and what's inside me, and it's great spiritual practice close to meditation.

The enso symbolizes enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and the void. It is characterized by a minimalism born of Japanese Zenga aesthetics. The tools and mechanics of drawing the enso are the same as those used in traditional Japanese calligraphy: a brush, black ink and thin rice paper.

This particular enso has been created on a full moon night, August 9, 2025. I used Japanese ink and my favourite wolf hait brush to achieve that fluid effect. The finished work has imprints of stone seals carved by myself: one bears my initials, the other is "Zen".
