This is a set of four original sumi-e paintings of The Four Noble, which is a collective term referring to four plants traditionally depicted together in Oriental traditional painting: the plum blossom, the wild orchid, the bamboo, and the chrysanthemum. Golden ink on black rice paper. The Four Noble Gentlemen (四君子, Si Junzi) have been used in Chinese painting since medieval times because of their refined beauty, and were later adopted elsewhere in East Asia by artists in China, Japan, and Korea. As they represent the four different seasons (the plum blossom for winter, the orchid for spring, the bamboo for summer, and the chrysanthemum for autumn), the four are used to depict the unfolding of the seasons through the year.
